NOTES

1 UNESCO Memory of the World Register www.portal.unesco.org/ci/en/ev.phpURL_ID=23174&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html The inclusion of The Battle of the Somme on this Register was largely the achievement of Roger B. N. Smither, who, at the time, was Keeper of the Film and Video Archive of the Imperial War Museum, London.

2 The print described in this paper is Imperial War Museum Film and Video Archive film catalogue number IWM 191 The Battle of the Somme (1916, produced by William F. Jury). Viewing copies of The Battle of the Somme on film have been in circulation since the Imperial War Museum inherited the British official film collection in 1919. VHS video copies were released by the Imperial War Museum commercially in association with DD Video in 1987, and in 2000 as a joint release The Battles of the Somme and the Ancre, each with a booklet of viewing notes to which the present author contributed. In 2008, a digitally restored version of The Battle of the Somme was released on DVD by the Imperial War Museum in association with Dragon Digital, also with an accompanying booklet from which some information in this essay has been taken. In addition, the Imperial War Museum holds two collections of papers related to the production and distribution of the film and the institutions responsible. One collection is held by the Film and Video Archive and referred to here as the IWM (Film) Papers; the other is held by the Department of Photographs and refereed to here as the IWM (Photo) Papers. See also Smither (1994) op. cit, with an introduction by the present author.

3 Quoted in the Bioscope, 17 August 1916, p. 576. An invitation to the original screening is preserved in the IWM (Film) Papers. For the events of the first day of the Somme offensive the classic account is still Middlebrook, M. (1971), The First Day on the Somme. London: Allen Lane, although some of its judgements have been superseded by Prior and Wilson (2005) op. cit.
